What will make me feel proud today?
What will make me feel secure?
What work needs to be done (tasks) so I can feel peaceful?
What is the life I really want?
What is the next best thing to do?
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Lately I’ve been getting up around 5:30 a.m.
Every morning I run through a little routine to get grounded and then, inspired.
It usually looks something like this:
Make a pot of coffee. Make my bed. Now I’m ready to think straight.
Talk to Jameson, my cat. Pet his fur and kiss his pink nose.
Sit down to my desk which looks over the East River and watch the sun rise for a few minutes. I watch the tug boats with their strands of Christmas lights slide across the periwinkle water. I always smile at this. I think tugboats are admirable in their tiny-but-mightiness.
I drink coffee and chat with God. I take notes on anything I think is a divine exchange.
I read a few pages from my favorite books: The War of Art, Conversations With God, and The Domino Book of Decorating.
The mixture of those three books light a gas lamp of desire, beauty, and motivation inside of me.
I write my 6 Big Things for the day. These are the things that I’m gonna do, come hell or high water.
Some days, both hell and high water show up and I don’t get them done. I transfer them on to the next day.
This morning I tried something new. Instead of reading my books for inspiration, I asked myself these questions:
- What will make me feel proud today?
- What will make me feel secure?
- What work needs to be done (tasks) so I can feel peaceful?
- What is the life I really want?
- What is the next best thing to do?
I quickly wrote down one answer to each question. I listened to my gut.
(If you are curious about my answers, I write such things in The St.Claire Diaries).
I’m finding an absolute treasure trove of wisdom and amazing ideas in my gut lately.
What questions would you ask yourself every morning, knowing that the best guidance is lying right there, in your heart?
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
This week, I posted a quote from King Leonidas: “In the end, a Spartan’s true strength is the warrior next to him. So give respect and honor to him, and it will be returned to you.” And then I wrote to a friend (and I mean this for each of you, too):
“I like the picture of us all in it together –daily– holding ground for each other. Whether we know our friends’ battle specifics or not, we are each other’s countrymen. And the arrow that is aimed toward your head will find itself thwarted by my shield, if I have anything to say about it.”

Hi Stephanie!
Just wanted to say thanks for writing this blog. Decided to start a variation of this routine this morning. Can I just tell you how wonderful it felt!?! I really enjoyed my morning thus far and I loved answering the questions. The best thing about it all…is that I feel like I am doing something for ME. That is the part that I love. Thank you my dear!

I love your 5 questions! I’m on a wonderful path to freedom; well, I’m already free, just don’t always live in it. These questions will help me avoid or walk through the habit of shame and self loathing, which I’ve carried most of my life.
I love your blog, and look forward to reading more!
