I’m participating in Shaytember and working on a personal goal to run 10 miles by Thanksgiving. This is going to be quite a feat, given that I have just been able to reach the one mile mark, huffing, puffing, lungs exploding. There is a special reason why I’m taking on this personal conquest. I explain here (Make a dream happen by picking a bigger problem).
Each day in September I am running 1 mile to prepare myself habitually to run and train in October. At first, I wanted to go out hard – you know, run one mile, and then next day do 1½ miles, and then push myself to do 2 miles the next day. And I realized that that is NOT going to work.
The FIRST thing I need to do is form a daily, consistent habit that makes room in my mind, heart, psyche, and schedule – something challenging but doable. So I chose the one-miler.
I want to ask you guys to join me (if you want) in this personal project. You can choose whatever you want – it doesn’t have to be running. I’ve already heard from a good number of you and your goals are beautiful! Finish writing the book you started, transition to a plant-based diet, start a meditation practice, lose 100 pounds, clean out your entire house and donate 1/3 of your belongings. You inspire me!!
Here’s a big secret. This October Goal Month is not about this particular goal. Running 10 miles will be amazing, but it is not the biggie. This is practice and blueprinting to give me access to start working on my LIFE DREAM. It’s been scaring the crap out of me because I feel like there’s no way I can do it. I dream, I scheme, I talk about it…but when it comes to taking action toward it, I’ve been paralyzed. Can you relate?
But. If I could run 10 miles without stopping I think I could do just about anything.
That’s the kind of goal you want to pick for October. The, “if I could do this, then I can do anything” goal.
I’ll be sharing more about my life dream in the weeks to come. I need to get brave people! And I was going to do this personal 10-mile project without telling you about it…but then I thought it would be great fun to encourage each other and run to the finish line together. I would love to do this together as a community.
I’ve started my very first YouTube channel. I’d love you to subscribe and share your goals and progress in the comments. I will be answering all comments and cheering you on.
For the rest of September I will be vlogging frequently and sharing my one-mile insights. I’m so SO excited to do this with you!
I love you guys and am in it to win it with you. No man left behind. Weak things made strong. Let’s do this. xo

I agree with you choosing a one mile goal helps you into getting into the habit of running every day.
The hardest thing for me is running that first mile.
Last year after a 2 year hiatus of running I started running and I struggled to make it to the 2 mile mark. When I was in the military I use to run 2 miles in about 11 minutes sometimes less.
45 Pounds more and many years later running two miles was a big obstacle I started scaling up and got up to the 7 mile mark I would run almost every day. In February I got sick and then went to SXSW beggining of march and with many excuses stopped running.
Thankfully I started a few weeks ago and my mark today is to reach 6 miles last week I made it to 6 miles at a fairly decent time. I am focusing on distance maybe we can both reach the 10 mile mark by November.
I will join you in the october challenge.
Great meeting you via AJ’s blog and seeing we have a few things in common already!
