This is #3 in the Series: 5 Daily Questions

Why are the 5 daily questions important? I wrote about that here.

For me, security means setting up my life up to handle a range of scenarios… Scenarios that might include fluctuations in client work, last-minute change of direction, the need to take a few days off, kid issues that require my full attention, economic downturns, my own resistance, my own mistakes and misjudgments, writers block, the occasional flu bug, snow days, and the vagaries of love and romance.

Just as important as asking ‘What will make me feel proud?’ is

Question 2: What will make me feel secure?

Security is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself. I picture my life like a small city and make it a daily practice to check the walls surrounding my city.

Maintaining my own personal security takes diligent effort and focused attention. I choose not to delegate my personal security to some one else.

I am the watchman on the wall. I am the gatekeeper. I unlock the door in the morning and blow out the last candle at night.

It is especially important, darlings, when going through a heart wrenching, stressful, or transitionary season to know what things will bring you security on a daily basis. Lemme just say, 2011 made me pro at this. Some examples might be: a certain amount of money in your account, a regular exercise time every day, a more structured schedule, getting to bed by midnight, checking off 5 things from your “Find a New Job” list, or saying no more often.

Some of the things on my list this year were to: create a morning spiritual practice that I loved, get a second job, say no to dating for six months (almost over, thank God), write every day, take Sundays off, and figure out how to be more productive on a daily basis (enter: the Six Big Rocks).

Every morning when I make my list at 6 a.m. I ask, ‘what will make me feel secure today?’

At the end of this day, what will make YOU feel secure?

With loving arms around you,
